A little something about me & the business...
So a few of you have asked how this all got started...so here is a bit about me and a bit about Simply Shontay LLC.
First of all, yes my name is Shontay, and that picture up there is of me and my kiddoes, or as I like to call them, Thing 1 and
Thing 2. I married my 5th grade crush, Chris, and he is such a big help with this little business. Many of you have met him, as he is the one that delivers cakes for me. He is home a lot (he is a firefighter) so I put him to work ; ) He also is the CFO, the chief financical officier, he gave himself the title, but basically he does our taxes. And I thank him for that. We live in the greater Seattle area, with our two kids, two cats, and dog....yes we are the typical surburban family. We both volunteer at the kids elementary school, we enjoy the company of our friends and family, and we love when we are all home so we can spend time with one another.
So that is a tidbit of us.....what about the business?...
I was co-hosting a baby shower for a dear friend of mine, way back in 2006. I was given the task of purchasing a diaper cake. A what!!!?? I had no clue what my hip friend from Laguna Beach, CA was talking about...a diaper cake? So, I started to do a search online. I found a few companies back on the East coast and was amazed at this gift idea. I was not happy with all the prices and what it would take to ship...so I dappled with the idea of making one myself. I looked at the pictures long enough that I figured I could give it the 'ol college try...and my first cake was made. And it was a success too, as the mom loved it! So each time I had a baby shower to attend, and being that I was in my late-20's I had a lot of showers to attend, I would make another cake. But this is not how the business got started....this was just a fun little hobby of mine, a craft, something that made me smile.
I started off painting holiday scenes on windows. You know, those snowmen and holly swags you see on the store fronts. I was
painting for a friends business locally, and a few people stopped and liked what they saw and wanted me to paint their windows. This now was more than helping out a friend, so my husband said its time to get a business license. I do work outside the home too. I have been in the veterinary field for over 18 years, and at least at this time, I cannot fathom giving up my "day job". Who doesn't want to play with dogs and cats all day?! I work a few days a week and am at home with Thing 1 and Thing 2 on other days; which allows me time to do what I do for all of you. I figured a business license and paying taxes for what I was bringing in painting was not a bad idea at all. But then it happened.....I was getting requests for diaper cakes from friends and family members. Oh this was fun! And it wasn't until my husband said, if you like doing the cakes so much, why are you freezing outside painting? Well, that was a good question. I started talking to my friends at work (or work family as I like to call them) and we started to brainstorm business names. My uncle had suggested forming an LLC (Limited Liability Company) and so I needed a name...but I drew a blank. So my sweet former coworker, said "Simply Shontay", since she teased me about being a Martha Stewart wannabe, she thought the name was fitting. I took a vote and it won. So June 2009 we formed Simply Shontay LLC.
It wasn't long after forming the business that I decided I did indeed enjoy being warm and so I stopped painting those holiday scenes and started putting my time and effort into the cake business. We joined the Pacific Market Center in Seattle, which allowed us to find a lot of our distributors, which allows us to pay less, which in turns allows you to pay less. Things definitely add up on cakes, but using distributors and buying wholesale definitely helps keep the prices as low as we can. In August of 2010, we moved into our dream home, and with the added space came a room that I love to retreat too....my design studio. Its not huge, 10x12 or so, but it provides me so much space and it just brings me joy to make cakes for all my friends, family and even more so for my customers. You have put so much faith in my ideas and I cannot thank you enough. I truly love what I do and do what I love.
So there you have it...a bit about me and a bit about this little business of mine that I truly have been enjoying. : )
